The technique was developed in the nineteenth century and was used, among other purposes, to document plants. Anna Atkins created botanical images by placing specimens directly on prepared paper. Areas covered by the plants remained light, while the exposed surface turned an intense blue. The process still follows the same basic principle, although modern kits make it much easier to create the first prints.
Light Replaces Traditional Printmaking Tools
The process begins with paper or fabric coated with a suitable light-sensitive solution. Leaves, flowers, lace, cut-out shapes or photographic negatives are then arranged on the surface. The composition is exposed to light and rinsed in water after the exposure is complete. The final image gradually appears, with pale silhouettes set against a blue background.
Exposure time depends on the weather, the chosen surface and the materials used. Some ready-made kits require approximately 10 to 20 minutes of exposure in sunlight or under UV light. The final result cannot be predicted as precisely as a digital print. Light intensity, object placement and rinsing all influence the appearance of the image. This makes every print slightly different.
